Are you looking to add a pop of color and personality to your living space? Cushions are a great way to do just that! But how do you combine cushions with different patterns and colors without creating a chaotic mess? Here are some rules and guidelines to help you create a harmonious and stylish look for your home.
CONSIDER OVERALL STYLE
Consider the overall style of your space when combining cushions with different patterns and colors. If you have a modern and minimalist space, opt for cushions with clean lines and simple patterns. If you have a bohemian or eclectic style, feel free to mix and match bold patterns and vibrant colors. Of course it is allowed (and can also give your space more personality) to try out something new and break this rule here and there. We don't want to have a showroom-like ambience in our homes.
MIX PATTERNS AND SOLIDS
Don't be afraid to mix patterns and solids! Combining cushions with different patterns can add visual interest to your space. You can then balance the patterns with solid-colored cushions to avoid overwhelming the eye. A good rule of thumb is to have one solid cushion for every two patterned cushions.
VARY THE SCALE OF PATTERNS
When combining cushions with different patterns, it's important to vary the scale of the patterns. This will create a more dynamic and visually appealing look. For example, if you have a large floral pattern, pair it with a smaller geometric pattern or a subtle stripe.
CONSIDER TEXTURE
Texture can add depth and dimension to your cushion arrangement. Mix and match cushions with different textures, such as velvet, bouclé, jaquard, to create a tactile experience. This will not only make your space more visually interesting but also make it more inviting and cozy.
STICK TO A COLOUR PALETTE
When combining cushions with different patterns and colors, it's important to have a cohesive color palette. Choose a few key colors that you want to incorporate and make sure that the cushions you select reflect those colors. This will help create a sense of unity and prevent the cushions from clashing with each other. However, you don't have to be super strict on this, deviations are clearly allowed!
USE ODD NUMBERS
When arranging cushions, it's best to use odd numbers. Odd numbers are visually pleasing and create a sense of balance. Try using three or five cushions on your sofa or bed to create a well-proportioned arrangement. Note: this is not a must :)
THE RIGHT FILLING IS KEY FOR A SOPHISTICATED LOOK
Cushions need to look properly filled to give them a sophisticated look. To achieve this a filling is best with natural feathers and also always a size bigger. At CLOUDS BY NORA our fillings are made of goose and duck feathers. They are always a size bigger than the cushion size. This provides our cushion with the right fullness.
Have fun experimenting with different patterns and colors, and don't be afraid to get creative and try out something new!
